Buddha's left hand holds a medicine bowl filled with the healing elixir that transforms all ills. It is said that one can generate enormous healing power for the self and for others by meditating on the Medicine Buddha. .

This Buddha is portraying the Varada mudra. The five extended fingers represent the five perfections: generosity, morality, patience, effort and concentration. The Varada mudra stands for compassion and charity and is often combined with other mudras.
